Arcane Lineage How Lives and Wipes Work
Three lives is the default meter. Phoenix Tear buys one back. A wipe is a decision, not a personality.
Arcane Lineage starts you with a small life pool — three lives on a normal first spawn — and then asks you to treat each death as tuition. This page is the how-to for that meter: how you lose lives, how you buy one back, what a wipe actually deletes, and why old “die on purpose for Hard mode” videos are now a trap. Difficulty is Trials. The Soulmaster no longer sells a Hard slider.
If you are already in the Fractured Realm and panicking, skip to the Phoenix Tear section. If you still have three lives and a random race, stay with the getting started loop and stop farming deaths for content.
What a life is
A life is a continue, not a currency you want to spend. Field packs, unread slams, and travel encounters all take one when you hit zero HP. After the last life, the character is gone unless you had a backup plan. That is the hardcore sentence the Roblox page does not print in bold.
Some lineages start with more. Community boards still call out Daminos and Dullahan as extra-life rolls, with Sheaa in later obtainable talk. Those names are not a first-hour plan. They are a reason a race might be worth keeping even when the passive is awkward. Confirm the live card on Trello before you wipe a working Paladin because a thumbnail said “more lives.”
How to get a life back
The item is a Phoenix Tear. It restores a single life. The usual vendor is the Mysterious Man in Caldera Town.
He is not a shopkeeper on a timer you can set an alarm for and always catch. Community routes still say he appears about once an hour, stays around ten minutes, and rotates tiles that include:
- Behind the appraiser building
- Behind the blacksmith
Stock rotates. You may see Memory Fragment, Soul Dust, a Lineage Shard, or nothing you want. Walk the two alleys when he is up. Do not stand in spawn refreshing a Discord ping for twenty minutes while your party clears a boss without you.
Phoenix Tear is also listed among consumable artifacts on some boards. Treat the function as the same: one life back. Treat the obtain as perishable.
Wipes are not the old Hard-mode trick
Older beginner videos told you to meditate in the forest, eat three deaths, visit the Fractured Realm, and ask the Soulmaster for Hard. That slider is gone. On 22 December 2025 Normal / Hard / Legendary were removed. If you still wipe on purpose to “unlock Hard,” you are deleting a character for a menu that does not exist. Configure Trials from a living character.
A wipe still means something:
- The slot is gone unless you paid for another soul or used a Lineage Shard as the reroll tool (that wipe is the point of the shard).
- A covenant you already joined does not let you leave without a wipe. That is the lock. Read it before you donate gold to Blades of the World on a joke character.
- New Horizons added a wipe NPC near Caldera fast travel so you do not have to feed yourself to slimes when you actually want a reset. Use the NPC if the live tile still has it. Do not invent a forest suicide ritual because a 2024 guide said so.
Fractured Realm, without the myth
Empty the life pool with no Essence banked and you can still wake in the Fractured Realm. It is a lobby, not a farm. It is not where you enable Greater trials. Leave it. Make a new character or spend Robux on a slot if you still like the account. The world page is the geography. This page is the cost.
How not to spend the meter
- Learn yellow on slimes before you take a named fight. The boss method assumes you already live.
- Heal between pulls. Doctor NPC, potions, and party skills are cheaper than a Tear.
- Party the walk to Withered Grove. Jungle packs do not care that you wanted a screenshot.
- Do not enable Mortal or Light and Dark trials because a creator called them “the real game.” They are the old Legendary dare with a new name.
Three lives is enough to learn the bar if you stop treating death as a skip button. A Phoenix Tear is a spare continue, not a build. A wipe is how you change a covenant, a race, or a mistake. It is not how you install difficulty anymore.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
How many lives do I start with in Arcane Lineage?
Three on a normal first spawn. Some rare lineages start with more. Confirm the live race card before you reroll for it.
How do I get lives back?
Use a Phoenix Tear, usually bought from the Mysterious Man in Caldera when he is up for about ten minutes each hour.
Should I wipe to unlock Hard mode?
No. Hard mode was removed in December 2025. Configure Trials on a living character. Do not die on purpose for a missing slider.
Can I leave a covenant without wiping?
No. Joining a covenant is a lock until a wipe. Read the covenant page before you sign.
