How to Get a Class in Arcane Lineage
Level 5, fifty gold, one weapon, one trainer. The Super Class fork comes later — do not sleepwalk the first pick.
“How to get a class” is the second search most players make after “how to play.” The answer is mechanical and easy to miss: reach level 5, buy a starter weapon in the Caldera Town shop, then talk to the trainer who teaches that weapon. This page is the full version, including the Super Class lock that makes the first purchase permanent in all the ways that matter.
If you have not done the town loop yet, run the beginner guide first. If you already own a weapon and the trainer is silent, you are either under level 5 or you bought the wrong tool.
The five Base Classes
| Base Class | Weapon | Role in a sentence |
|---|---|---|
| Warrior | Sword / broadsword | Frontliner with stun and block passives |
| Thief | Dagger | Bleed, blind, extra gold, faster run |
| Slayer | Spear | Poison, multi-hit, agility after dodges |
| Martial Artist | Cestus | Rapid hits, better blocks, fist damage |
| Wizard | Staff | Ranged Magic Missile, scrolls, lower threat |
Musician, Beastmaster, and Alchemist appear in older writeups as extra lines. Treat live trainer rooms on the Trello as the source of truth if a seasonal patch adds or hides a kit.
Step-by-step unlock
- Farm Essence on Hard. Meditate and sit at level 5 or higher. The Soul Tree page explains the orb.
- Walk left of Yorn into the weapon shop. Climb the ladder.
- Buy one starter weapon for about 50 gold. That purchase is the class key.
- Find the trainer for that weapon. You must be level 5 or the dialogue will not complete.
- Leave town and actually use the kit. Skills on paper do not teach the QTE.
The class picker will show you the Super Class fork before you spend the gold. The class roster lists the early skills so you know whether you are buying stun, poison, or a missile minigame.
Super Classes lock the identity
Around level 15 you can take a Super Class tied to the Base you already own:
- Warrior → Berserker or Paladin
- Thief → Assassin or Rogue
- Slayer → Impaler or Saint
- Martial Artist → Darkwraith or Monk
- Wizard → Necromancer or Elementalist
Alignment — Orderly, Neutral, or Chaotic — gates some of those forks. Do not plan a Paladin on a character you have been playing like a murder hobo unless the live Trello says the alignment check is gone. The alignment page and the Super Class roster are the planning pair. Rankings live on the Super Class tier list.
Match the race before you buy
A random race with a magic passive into Warrior is playable and miserable. Check the races page and, if needed, wait for a Lineage Shard instead of forcing a meme. Extra soul slots cost Robux if you want a second character without deleting the first.
Common failures
Trainer ignores you. You are under level 5, or you are talking to the spear trainer while holding a dagger.
You bought two weapons. Only the trainer you complete matters. The second weapon is gold you could have spent on potions.
You picked Wizard to “learn later.” Wizard adds a minigame on top of the shared dodge bar. If yellow is still random, pick a physical line and switch later with a new slot.
You skipped Daze. Yorn’s skill is not a class. Take it anyway. It makes every Base Class feel twice as real.
What to read next
After the trainer handshake, open the class tier list for a power snapshot, the builds page for a first stat spread, and the boss guide before you treat a named enemy like a slime. Classes are a door. Combat is still the hallway.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
What level do I need for a Base Class?
Level 5. Buy the matching starter weapon in the Caldera Town shop, then talk to that weapon’s trainer.
Can I change Base Class later?
Not as a free respec. Plan the Super Class fork first, or start another soul slot if you want a different weapon line.
When do Super Classes unlock?
Around level 15, after you own a Base Class and meet the alignment and trainer requirements listed on the live Trello.
