Arcane Lineage How Combat and QTE Dodging Work

The timing bar is the real tutorial. Classes only matter after you can live through a turn.

Combat and QTE Dodge

Arcane Lineage looks like a menu fighter until the bar appears. Then it is a rhythm game wearing an RPG coat. If you came here from a “how to dodge” search, the short answer is: tap Space in the yellow window. The long answer is how that window interacts with Guard, chip damage, energy, and a party that will die if you greed every sword QTE.

Read this after the beginner guide and before you argue about the class tier list. A top-tier Super Class still folds if the player cannot see yellow.

The defense bar

When an enemy winds up, a timing bar slides across the screen. Three outcomes matter:

  • Yellow window, Space: full dodge. No damage. This is the skill the game is actually teaching.
  • Red window, Space: partial read. You take about half. Better than eating the hit, worse than yellow.
  • Guard (hold): most of the damage is blocked. You still take chip. Martial Artist and Warrior passives reduce that chip. Guard is how you survive a pattern you have not learned.

Space is bound for a reason. Clicking the on-screen prompt works, but it is slower on mobile and sloppier in a 25-player server. Rebind nothing until the yellow window is muscle memory. The controls page lists the rest of the HUD.

The offense bar

Your own turn has a sword QTE. Nail it and the attack hits harder. Miss it and you still swing, just weaker. New players treat this like a damage race and then die on the enemy’s follow-up. The correct habit is: only greed the sword bar when the party is stable. If the tank is on one life and the boss is winding a slam, spend the turn on a utility skill or a safe auto.

Daze, earned from Yorn in town, is the early exception. It doubles a hit and weakens the target. Landing Daze on a clean sword window is how slimes and first bosses stop feeling random. See the boss guide for when to hold it.

Energy, recharge, and why you do not spam

Skills cost energy and sit on recharge. Thief’s Pocket Sand blinds for three turns and then goes dark. Slayer’s Serpent Strike applies poison and is not a filler auto. If you dump every skill on pull, you will spend the scary turns pressing a basic attack with no tools. Count recharge the same way you count lives.

Wizard’s Magic Missile adds a short minigame. That is extra timing on top of the shared bar. If you cannot pass the basic dodge yet, do not start on staff just because the projectile looks cooler than a spear.

Party timing

The official page says the game is designed for party play. In combat that means two things. First, encounter difficulty scales with group size, but a missed dodge is no longer a wipe if someone else is still standing. Second, targeting passives matter. Wizard’s Coward trait lowers the chance you are picked. A tanky Warrior with Strength Training wants to be picked. Stand in the right job.

Call the slam. If you play with voice, say “yellow” when you see a new windup. If you play mute, watch the animation twice before you greed. Most early wipes are not DPS checks. They are four people missing the same unread bar.

Builds that forgive mistakes

Endurance stretches the window you have to learn a pattern. Luck feeds the loot that buys potions. A beginner build that stacks those two stats will outlive a glass Strength stack that looks better on a tier list. Use the stat calculator after every level so you do not dump all three points into Speed because it “feels nice.”

Race passives also change combat. Some lineages start with extra Arcane or extra body. If your roll fights the class, the Lineage Shard guide is the reroll path. Do not blame the bar for a race that was never meant to stand in front.

Practice loop

  1. Fight slimes until yellow is boring.
  2. Turn on Hard if you have not already.
  3. Take Daze.
  4. Unlock a class that matches the weapon you can already time.
  5. Only then walk toward a named boss.

Combat is the skill floor. Everything else on this wiki is a multiplier on top of it.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

How do I dodge in Arcane Lineage?

When the timing bar appears, tap Space in the yellow window for a full dodge. Red halves the hit. Hold Guard if you do not know the pattern yet.

Is Guard worse than dodging?

Yes. Guard still lets chip through. It is the safe button for new animations, not the long-term plan.

Does party play change the QTE?

The bar is the same. Parties make a missed read less lethal and let roles cover each other while you learn a boss windup.
